The Union Minister of shipping Shri G.K. Vasan has stated that Port Trusts have a role to educate common people to make them understand the importance of ports in the economic development of the country, as a part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
Launching various CSR projects of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust in Mumbai today, he said through the initiatives of the Minister of State for Shipping Shri Milind Deora, JNPT has become the first port to invite school students to visit the port facilities, without compromising on its operations and security.
Schools from various parts of Mumbai would be covered, where they would be explained of the current facilities, systems and procedures of the biggest container port of India and also the significance of ports in Export-Import trade.
Shri Vasan pointed out that JNPT would also be setting up Gymnasiums in various parts especially for the less privileged youth. For senior citizens a ‘Boat Cruise’ has been launched by the JNPT initially for a period of six months, to provide them a quality leisure time.
The Port trust in partnership with the “Tourist first” initiative is also taking up some initiatives around the ‘Gateway of India’ besides proposing to provide some facilities at the Elephanta Island designated as World Heritage site by UNESCO.
JNPT is thus launching various projects to aid different sections of the society like senior citizens, youth, students and tourists.
Last year, the Ministry issued detailed guidelines to enable the major Ports to take up CSR activities.
